Haven’t most of us women searched for a magic potion for a youthful looking skin?

I’ve tried a number of skin care products just so to maintain that youthful look – especially on my face. We’ve all seen products available over the counter promising an intense moisture boost to leave skin feeling beautifully soft and smooth. I’ve fallen for most conventional practices of applying lotions, serums, creams, oils, powders and other cosmetics. They might have helped temporarily and I’m sure they had a side effect on my skin which I wasn’t aware of at that time. But the search is not yet over.

I’ve not given up on myself just yet! I’ve come across an article about a woman who drank 3 litres of water a day and looked dramatically younger at the end of the trial. This idea has inspired me to go deeper and look for more about the effects of water and hydration on our system, skin especially.

If drinking slightly more water a day can have tremendous benefits for our body, how would it benefit the skin? Should I just drink regular tap water or go for a specific type of water? Would this make a difference? Would I feel it’s giving me more energy? Would it support my digestion, keep the organs working properly, flush out toxins, and so on? But most importantly would it be an answer to my quest finding water which can help me restore that youthful glow?

Tap water – yes or no?

It’s amazing how water plays such significant roles in our body. The more I started to realise this, the more I asked myself – is it safe to drink water directly from the tap? Tap water might still be contaminated with some heavy metals (primarily from the soil and rusty or lead water pipes), hormones (from the drugs people and cattle farmers flush down their drains), fluoride (that some municipalities add deliberately) and pesticides (that farmers spray on their crops). Although the focus for our government may be satisfactory water purification, how safe can this really be? Imagine drinking all the toxins. They are getting accumulated in our system. Can there be even a better way of converting tap water into something natural, free of chemicals, free of elements such as fluoride, lead, drugs and pesticides?

The answer is YES! Luckily, science didn’t stop at water purification. There’s more. Over the last decade, there’ve been a great many studies and research published on the possible therapeutic benefits of molecular hydrogen.

What is molecular hydrogen?

According to Molecular Hydrogen Foundation, Molecular Hydrogen (H2) or diatomic hydrogen is a tasteless, odourless gas.

  • Over 500 peer-reviewed articles demonstrate hydrogen to have therapeutic potential in essentially every organ of the human body and in 150 different human disease models.

  • H2 reduces oxidative stress as a selective antioxidant and by maintaining homeostatic levels of glutathione, superoxide dismutase, catalase, etc.

  • H2, like other gaseous signaling molecules (i.e. NO, CO, H2S), appears to have cell signal-modulating activity affording it with anti-inflammatory, anti-obesity, and anti-allergy benefits.

How do we get the benefits from Molecular Hydrogen?

There are various ways to get molecular hydrogen in our body and each one of this methods can have a therapeutic effect. Inhalation of H2, injection of H2-rich saline, dropping H2-rich saline into eyes, taking a bath in H2-rich water, increasing H2 production by intestinal bacteria, topical application, oral ingestion of hydrogen producing tablets or simply drinking H2-rich water.

Before we dive in deeper, we have to understand that hydrogen is something innate to our body. It’s always been there and it always will be – by design. When we eat vegetables and fibre-rich foods, bacteria in our gut (if all is well) can create molecular hydrogen. It gets through the intestinal into our bloodstream, tissues and cells, where it does the job it’s designed to do which is primarily to protect/slow down the cell from oxidative stress (rusting, ageing).

Considering that 90% of all diseases have some link to oxidative stress, it’s only logical that it might be beneficial to support the body with increased intake of molecular hydrogen. Apart from food, the easiest and most convenient way of getting more H2 into our system is through water (so-called hydrogen/H2 rich or enriched water).

My quest for glowing skin: The evidence

The quest for healthy wrinkle-free glowing looking skin dates back to primal years. One of the ways to accomplish these is by soaking and bathing in hot springs and mineral waters. There was a study conducted where bathing in specific waters that have reductive characteristics seems to have great therapeutic benefits. “One study tested a mineral water with reductive characteristics (it could be due to dissolved molecular hydrogen) and a prepared water containing molecular hydrogen.(MHF)

The results revealed that bathing in both of these waters decreased the oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) of human skin. According to a review published in NCBI,  “Oxidation events and skin ageing indicates that skin ageing events are initiated and often propagated by oxidation events, despite recently recognized adaptive responses to oxidative stress”. (Oxidation events and skin ageing as Published in NCBI). It means that bathing in a hydrogen enriched water may be healthier our skin.

There’s also a review on hydrogen as a selective antioxidant which helps in inflammation in the body’s tissues and can be used as an effective antioxidant therapy. (Nature Medicine). Molecular Hydrogen is the smallest and powerful anti-oxidant. Because of its size it can penetrate the gut easily and helps in removing free radicals. Those very guys which cause premature ageing and other degenerative diseases in our body.

Another Pilot study: Effects of drinking hydrogen-rich water on muscle fatigue caused by acute exercise in elite athletes proves that adequate hydration with hydrogen-rich water pre-exercise reduced blood lactate levels and improved exercise-induced decline of muscle function.

The more I research the more I’m convinced that dissolving hydrogen in water is very beneficial. It acts as an antioxidant which neutralises free radicals – the major contributing factor to skin ageing.

Drinking water with dissolved hydrogen gas seems to be also helpful for our gut! An article published in Medical Gas Research stated that “Hydrogen is unique since it has the capability to act at the cellular level. It exerts antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, anti-inflammatory, and cytoprotective properties that are beneficial to the cell. (Read more)

Is producing Hydrogen rich/infused water easy?

Fortunately, we don’t have to travel just to soak and bathe ourselves in Hot Springs in different parts of the world. Thanks to Science and Technology we can enjoy the benefits of having hydrogen enriched water from the comforts of our own homes.

We can enjoy the benefits of hydrogen rich water at a push of a button in our own kitchen. We can apply it to our skin which will definitely support the restoration of its elasticity and reduce the skin ageing process.

We have different choices. Synergy Science has revolutionised the water filtration and presented us with different options of Echo Hydrogen Rich Water producing machines. All can be easily be installed over or under the kitchen counter. There’s also a solution for you if you want the whole house filtered so you don’t need to worry about absorbing chlorine, heavy metals, pharmaceuticals, and poisons when you shower and bathe. There’s even a convenient option of having your hydrogen water while on the move by keeping a travel-friendly bottle of Echo H2 tablets or Echo H2 drops. Basically, you can have your hydrogen rich water anytime, anywhere.
